The quality of LSU’s academics is reflected in the number of
nationally ranked programs and nationally recognized scholars at LSU.
Since its first commencement in 1869, LSU has awarded nearly 200,000
degrees. That number continues to grow and includes some of the nation’s
best and brightest graduates. LSU's football program has won
two National Bowl Championship Series Championship
titles since 2003, and has a championship baseball, basketball (both
women's and men's) and softball teams.
LSU’s administration are the leaders of a University-wide endeavor known
as the Flagship Agenda, which is a road map to guide the University toward an
increased national presence by 2010. Each year, LSU conducts more than
2,500 sponsored research projects funded by more than $140 million in external
grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, NASA,
National Endowment for the Humanities, and many others. Within those projects
is work that may one day cure diseases, unearth artifacts and species of animals
thought never to exist, save lives in the face of a natural disaster or expand
the perception of the world’s great writers and artists.
In addition to our sports and academic achievements, our students have
been nationally recognized for their sense of social responsibility
and service, and our student media has been recognized for its excellence,
including its work in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
