When you are dealing with a city as old as Baton Rouge, you are talking about the possibility of a location that is home to some who are not among the land of the living. If you are a fan of ghosts and all things spooky, then you will be pleased to learn that Baton Rouge has a spooky side just waiting to be explored. We are going to take a moment to look at some of the reportedly haunted spots in the city, but before we do, you should be aware that Baton Rouge is home to several different ghost tours, where the guides will take you to many of these scary spots.
USS Kidd – This old battleship served her time during WWII and the Korean War, where she picked up more than her fair share of casualties. The ship is now a museum that can be freely explored, but things become a little more sinister at night, with tales of ghost sailors in full uniform abound. This really is a great place to visit at any time of day, but just keep an eye open for those spectral men in uniform.
Old State Penitentiary – While most people are dying to get out of prison, there are some who choose to stick around long after their time is up. The Old State Penitentiary is home to countless ghost stories, with phantom footsteps and flickering lights just some of the spooky happenings that have been reported over the years.
Spanish Moon – If you are in the mood for a late-night drink and some live music, Spanish Moon might just be the place for you. Be aware, though, that there are more than just the usual bar spirits being served up here. The story goes that this place was used as a temporary morgue back in the 1920’s after a disaster struck the city, so it is perhaps no real surprise that ghostly sightings are common here.
Guaranty Income Life and Broadcasting Building – This old brick building may look a bit like a bank from the outside, but it holds a history that is sure to be more than a little surprising. This location was in fact once home to a hospital and morgue and is now considered to be one of the more haunted spots in all of Baton Rouge.
Parlange Plantation House – This location is one that may not be covered by the city ghost tours, but it’s one that is certainly worth a visit if you are interested in all things spooky. If you are interested in trying to catch a glimpse of the young girl who walks around in a wedding dress on moonlit nights, be aware that this location is a private residence that requires an appointment for viewings.
There are even more spooky spots to be found in and around Baton Rouge, so be sure to pack your ghost hunting gear when you visit.
